John Parr – one of  Burscough’s best known characters has passed away

All at Burscough FC were saddened to hear of the passing of John Parr, and send our sincere condolances to his family.

John Yates shared his memories of John…

John was one of Burscough’s best known characters and a talented sportsman in his younger days.  A centre half in the Linnets’ playing squad shortly after the Second World War, he also kept wicket for the local cricket club and in both sports you could  guarantee 100 percent commitment and effort every time he stepped onto the playing surface.

John also brought loads of fun and humour to his cricketing exploits – and I can still remember the days when, as a team-mate, I looked on in awe at his antics behind the stumps.  On several occasions when the ball passed the bat he would stick it in one of his pockets and then turn around to see if it had reached the boundary !

Burscough born and bred, he loved riding his trusty pedal bike around the village, often stopping to have a chat with customers heading for Tesco to buy their weekly shopping
